100 Years of Shonto        A historical gem in the heart of the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona.

  The Past
   A NAVAJO WEAVER

Sophie Talker’s grandmother was living in the Betatakin area when she was taken captive and forced to make the long journey to Fort Sumner. Sophie performed the traditional duties of sheep herding, household work and caring for her family.  She was also a master weaver. Pictured here is one of her latest rugs showing the creative skill she has passed on to her children. Sophie noted that there was a division between parents and children. She believed it was because of the changing way of life and she was uncertain where this will lead in the future.
