Dancing Fancy

By Triciya

When I am dancing I feel relief and forget all the worries and all the bad things. Some people compete for the money. I dance to have fun. But sometimes I compete, because some pow wows are like that. But it is important to dance to have fun, because you wouldn’t like it if you just worry about winning.

There are people who drum and sing a certain song to a certain dance. Sometimes the people who drum compete too.

In the drum group they have a leader. The leader starts out the song. But before we dance we do the Victory song and the Flag song. Then all the dancers go on to the floor and they sing the Grand Entry song.

I am a Fancy Dancer. I wear moccasins with legging which can be beaded. A shawl, a dress, a cape. You have to have your hair braided. You can put feathers in your hair and barrettes, but no jewelry.

It takes a lot of work to dance and a lot of practice. To me it is almost like a sport.

There is all kind of dances. There are boys and girls traditional, which goes slow

There are boys and girls fancy, that goes really fast. There is boys’ grass that goes medium. Than there is girls’ jingle, that goes medium.

I like to dance fancy, because I like to go fast and have fun. When I dance I hear the sounds of the people and I feel like I am dancing on a cloud or floating around. After I perform people would give me good compliments about how I dance, that’s what makes me feel good about me.  After the pow wow is finished they sing the closing song. Everyone has to stand up and take off their hats to have respect for our nation and the drum.
