100 Years of Shonto        A historical gem in the heart of the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona.

The Project

A middle school fancy dancer performs at a school assembly.

  • Mrs. Crowley-Miner and her students interviewed elders, students, teachers, staff and other knowledgeable people who have lived, boarded and worked in Shonto throughout the past 75 years.

  • As a part of explaining the essence of Shonto for “100 Years of Shonto” project, Mrs. Crowley-Miner’s Middle School Talented and Gifted students submitted the video to Tuba City Film Festival.  The video, entitled, “My Secret Place” was created last year depicting the importance of each student’s secret “get-a-away spot” in the Shonto vicinity.

  • All of the students in the project participated in locating and studying photographs taken of Shonto in the 1930's.  Mrs. Crowley-Miner then  re-photographed  the landscape and the students compared the changes and similarities of the exact site.

  •  Mrs. Crowley-Miner's students researched how the dorms, school, land, food, jobs and attitudes have changed throughout the years.  This was done by developing several different types of survey sheets in which the Talented & Gifted students created, passed out and summarized.  Audio taped interviews were also a source of means.

  • Middle School T.A.G. students collected all of the information above and created a booklet which will be available to the Shonto Community.
