Geography

Shonto is located at 36°35′54″N, 110°39′29″W (36.598209, -110.658156)GR1.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 568 people, 149 households, and 118 families residing in the Shonto. The population density was 48.0/km˛ (124.3/mi˛). There were 220 housing units at an average density of 18.6/km˛ (48.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the Shonto was 96.30% Native American, 1.94% White, 0.18% Black or African American, , and 1.58% from two or more races and 1.06% Hispanic or Latino.

There were 149 households out of which 52.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were married couples living together, 19.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% were non-families. 18.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.81 and the average family size was 4.40.

Shonto's population was spread out with 43.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.
